The Art and Science of Drone Launchpad
The familiar round shape, luminous orange or blue colour foldable piece of landing pads with nylon
cloth, weaved into a bendable round-hoop drone pilots used to see, has surprisingly, several essential
pointers to consider before buying.
In this post, we breakdown these pointers to help our readers discern and make better decisions in
which types of UAV launchpads to buy.
What is the purpose of launchpads?
Some folks find that launchpads are more applicable to professional and commercial drone pilots. Some
UA operators we at DrE (Drones Enthusiast) came across feel that it looks more professional for their
Whether it is aesthetic, image or just pure marketing, there are functional elements to UA launchpads.
How to choose one?
Launchpads come in difference sizes, shapes (round shape pads may be more commonly seen),
materials and construction.
- Sizes typically come in 55, 75 and 110 cm or Small, Medium and Large respectively. The cost
varies with the sizes but they are not too far apart
While we earlier mentioned about round shaped launchpads, there are square and rectangular
shapes as well
- Our preference is the convention shape in launch/landing pads. Whether square or otherwise
doesn’t really make critical differences to the functional and protection aspects of the drones
we represent. At least not yet. Some people we spoke to felt that round pads may better
facilitate in storage and transportation. Below picture from Android Central.
- Material is important! Many of the cheaper launch/landing pads in the market are made of
waterproof fabric or material. For most drone pilots and hobbyists, this should suffice.
There are however better and different grades of drone landing pads. Such as those made of
rubber. The rubberised material of these pads provide a cushioning factor to help absorb impact
from landing. Many launch/landing pads are made of nylon cloth, some have nano coating for
better water flow
- Construction of launch/landing pads seems to be straightforward but there are some finer
details and may be useful to help choose which is suitable for your needs. One of the bells and
whistles we came across is lights!
Yes, some come with built-in LED or neon lights around the ream of the landing pads. This can
be useful for UA pilots who take to night flying.
Some pads also have raised legs. This elevates the pad from the ground and can reduce surface
contact over puddles or muddy grounds
While orange and blue colours are mostly what you might see, black, green, red and yellow are
combining colours to the pads as well. In fact, colours are up to individual preference. Some
hobbyists we came across can be quite “hardcore” to the extend that they go DIY for their
launch/landing pads and creatively mix and match colours to their liking!
To summarise, what are the benefits of UAV launch/landing pads?
- A landing pad can prevent or at least reduce dirt, dust and debris for getting into your drones;
the grooves, cameras, motors and its nooks and crannies
- You can carry a foldable and portable landing pad as it folds into a small piece. Highly
convenient for most hobbyists
- Some of the launch/landing pads are made of rubber which weighs itself down to the ground for
All in all, whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced drone flyer, investing in launch/landing
pads for your drones is actually protecting your investment.
